Overview
If you run a manufacturing MSME and a customer, bank or tender document has started asking about your quality, safety or environmental practices, the MSME Sustainable (ZED) Certification scheme is the government’s answer built for exactly that situation. Launched by the Ministry of MSME in April 2022 and implemented through the Quality Council of India, the ZED certification scheme lets a Udyam-registered manufacturing MSME earn a Bronze, Silver or Gold credential against a fixed set of quality, safety, energy and governance parameters — and, unlike most private certifications, the scheme itself subsidises a large share of what it costs to get there.
It helps to be precise about what ZED actually is, because some pages blur it with a mandate. ZED Certification is entirely voluntary — the Ministry of MSME says so directly — and it is currently open only to the manufacturing sector; a service-sector model is still being developed, so a services MSME cannot yet apply even if Udyam-registered. Only Udyam-registered units qualify at all; an unregistered business cannot participate under any circumstance. ZED is also not an ISO standard or a substitute for one — it is an independent government scheme certification that sits alongside whatever ISO or sector certificates you already hold, and does not exempt you from any other regulatory requirement.
The scheme’s certification-cost subsidy is what makes ZED worth the paperwork: 80% for micro enterprises, 60% for small and 50% for medium, with a further 10% for women, SC/ST-owned units or units in the North-East, Himalayan, LWE or aspirational-district regions, and another 5% for units already enrolled in SFURTI or MSE-CDP. Existing accredited certificates such as ISO 9001 or ISO 45001 get the matching ZED parameter assessed as exempt rather than re-tested. One flag worth reading carefully: the 2022 guidelines cap this financial-support structure at 31 March 2026 on paper — a date already behind us, with no extension notice we could locate, though the ZED portal and QCI’s empanelment activity still look live. We verify the scheme’s current subsidy status with QCI before you budget around these percentages.

Eligibility & requirements
- Udyam registration is mandatory — unregistered MSMEs cannot participate in ZED Certification under any circumstance
- At present the scheme is designed for manufacturing-sector MSMEs only; a service-sector model is still in development, with no published launch date
- Every applicant takes the ZED Pledge before applying for any level; Bronze, Silver and Gold are cumulative — Silver includes Bronze’s 5 parameters plus 9 more, Gold includes Silver’s 14 plus 6 more
- Bronze is assessed on uploaded self-declaration documents alone; Silver adds a remote assessment by a QCI-accredited Assessment Agency; Gold adds an onsite assessment
- ZED Certification is entirely voluntary and does not replace ISO or any other regulatory certification or requirement
- Where multiple units sit under one Udyam Registration, each unit must apply for certification separately to individually avail the subsidy and benefits

Documents you’ll typically need
- Udyam Registration certificate showing manufacturing-sector classification and enterprise size (micro/small/medium)
- For Bronze: photographs and records evidencing shop-floor condition, product and labelling, and fire-safety systems for self-declaration upload
- Existing accredited certificates such as ISO 9001 or ISO 45001, if you want the corresponding ZED parameter assessed as exempt
- Process, safety, energy and delivery records relevant to the parameters of the level you are applying for (Silver and Gold add HR, maintenance, material, energy and environment records)
- Details confirming Women/SC-ST ownership or NER/Himalayan/LWE/Island/aspirational-district location, if claiming the additional subsidy add-on
- Confirmation of any SFURTI or MSE-CDP enrolment, if claiming the further add-on subsidy
